The central question of the film adaptation of Ken Kesey’s novel concerns the psychological impact of the systems and institutions society has created.

The embodiment of this conflict is one of the great anti-heroes of American cinema, R.P. McMurphy, who is at once a liberating force whilst being simultaneously more tightly wrapped in the spider’s web.

McMurphy is supposedly not ‘crazy’, having only pretended to avoid the penitentiary, and who better to impersonate crazy for the screen than Jack Nicholson.
